Oklahoma averages 52 tornadoes per year. Since 1950, over 4,500 tornadoes have touched down in our state. Understanding where they’ve hit β and where they’re hitting now β is critical for anyone serious about emergency preparedness.
We built the OKMesh Tornado Tracker β an interactive map of every recorded tornado in Oklahoma from 1950 to today.

What It Does
The tracker displays tornado paths on a full-screen interactive map, color-coded by EF/F scale rating. You can filter by year, rating, and county to explore Oklahoma’s tornado history β or check what’s happened recently.
Features
- 4,500+ tornado paths β every recorded tornado in Oklahoma (1950βpresent)
- Color-coded by EF scale β EF0 (green) through EF5 (magenta)
- Tornado paths drawn on map β see start-to-end tracks, not just dots
- Year range slider β explore any era from 1950 to today
- EF rating filter β focus on significant events (EF3+) or see everything
- County filter β 80 Oklahoma counties, populated from actual data
- Click any path β date, rating, fatalities, injuries, affected counties
- Stats panel β filtered count, total fatalities for your selection
Auto-Updated Daily
Unlike static historical databases, our tracker updates automatically every day. A server-side script checks the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) daily storm reports every morning at 6:00 AM CT and adds any new Oklahoma tornadoes to the dataset. During severe weather season, you’ll see new events appear within 24 hours of occurrence.
Data Sources
- 1950β2024: SPC Tornado Archive (comprehensive historical CSV)
- 2025+: SPC daily storm reports (auto-fetched and merged daily)
Why This Matters for Mesh
Meshtastic mesh networks exist for exactly these scenarios β when cell towers go down and infrastructure fails. Understanding tornado patterns helps mesh operators plan node placement, identify vulnerable coverage areas, and prepare for the storms that will test our network.
Combined with our open-source alert tools, we can push NWS tornado warnings directly to mesh radios through Home Assistant and Matrix.
Stay safe out there, Oklahoma. π‘
